Snapchat Will Let Parents See Who Their Children Are Messaging
As part of its child safety efforts, Snapchat is launching new parental control tools that will let parents see who their kid is chatting with on the social media app without disclosing the actual content of the messages they send each other.
Before the supervision tools take effect, both the kid and the parent or guardian must accept the Family Center invites. Once the invites are accepted, Snapchat’s new “Family Center” hub with parental control features will let parents and guardians see the lists of their children’s friends and who they’ve messaged over the last seven days. Parents can also report concerning accounts to the Trust and Safety Team of Snap.
“Our goal was to create a set of tools designed to reflect the dynamics of real-world relationships and foster collaboration and trust between parents and teens,” Snap said in a blog post announcing the new tools.
In the coming weeks, the company plans to add another feature allowing parents to view new friends their kids add. More parental control features are also slated to be launched in the fall.
