DeLorean Unveils First Images of Its Alpha 5 Electric Car
Almost 40 years after the original DeLorean DMC-12 car was introduced on the market, the legendary sports car from the Back to the Future trilogy returns in the form of an upgraded all-electric vehicle dubbed Alpha 5.
The design of the new car is very different from the DMC-12, but the company has kept the most important attribute – the gull-wing doors.
The Alpha 5 needs 2.99 seconds to reach 60mph or 4.35 seconds to reach 88mph. A battery with a capacity of 100 kWh offers an estimated 300 miles of range and a top speed of 155mph.
The Alpha 5 has four seats in the cabin, a touch screen to control vehicle functions, and a digital dashboard.
The Italian company ItalDesign, which worked on the look of the original DMC-12, had earlier confirmed its participation in the project.
DeLorean Alpha 5 will be officially premiered on August 18 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance event in California.
The original DeLorean Motor Company was founded by John DeLorean in 1975, but went bankrupt shortly after. In 1995, former British engineer Stephen Wynne acquired the DeLorean branding rights and now provides support and services for the remaining DeLorean vehicles.
